Hello and welcome back, again! Long time readers of this blog know that I am quite the racing history junkie and today we will indulge ourselves with some lost photos. I have a friend who recovered these pictures from a dumpster and sent them my way; most are not indycar pictures, but this is the only avenue I have to release them.
I have no idea who the originating photographer was or even some of the venues that these pictures were captured. Even given the presence of Formula 1 and Formula 2 machinery in this gallery, I believe that all of these were all taken in the US, so if you think you can decipher what facility some of these were taken at let me know! included in the gallery are F1, Can-Am, USAC (indycars), and what looks to be some kind of pony series. Know venues are the Indy 500 parade, IMS and the old Texas World Speedway.
Captures of AJ Foyt, Paul Newman, James Hunt, Mario Andretti, Al Unser and many more are included. The pictures are high resolution so be patient when loading this page and even more when opening specific pictures. I am very interested in your feedback in determining driver/location/series/year so please help if you can!

DSCF0163 looks like Mark Donohue, IndyCar in 1972 or 1973
DSCF0136 and DSCF0137 are Spike Gehlhausen, Indy Car, 1976
DSCF0153 is Al Unser Sr, in either 1976 or 1977 in Indy Car
DSCF0149 is Donohue also, same era
DSCF0152 is Johnny Rutherford, IndyCar, 1976
DSCF0151 is Pancho Carter, Indy Car, either 1976 or 1977
A lot of these cars were run more than 1 year w/same driver so it’s hard to say for sure which year the particular photo is from.
DSCF0138 – 1976 Indy Car. Car on high line is Bobby Olivero (78), car on lower line is Tom Bigelow (24). I think the track is the old Texas World Speedway (not to be confused with TMS).

DSCF0161 and DSCF0162 – 1972 Indy Car, these are both Cale Yarborough. And I think the track is Pocono.
Cale was only present at 2 Indy Car races in ’72, Indy and Pocono. Pictures don’t look like Indy to me. Note the guys in lawn chairs watching in the infield with no fencing or protection at all between the cars/track and themselves!
Cale was a DNQ at Pocono, so the pictures must’ve been from practice/qualifying.
DSCF0150 – this is very cool. That’s Jim McElreath in 1977 winning the first Indy 500 Pit Stop Challenge.
Another interesting thing, the car was powered by an AMC engine, which was rare. It had previously been driven at Indy in ’76 (with AMC power) and ’75 (with an Offy) by Jerry Grant.
DSCF0146 – not 100% sure on this. It is 1972 I believe. I am going to say that’s Bob Harkey at Pocono (you also had a couple other photos from Pocono ’72). Car was driven at a couple other Indy Car races that year by Johnny Parsons so those are possibilities as well.
DSCF0126 – F1, Carlos Pace. I can tell by his distinctive helmet. Year is probably ’72 or ’73, no idea the track.
Pace is interesting because in his career he had 1 win and 1 pole yet the Interlagos F1 circuit (still where Brazilian Grand Prix is held) is named after him (track is officially named “Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace”). There is also a large bust of him outside the track. Those are some pretty serious honors for a driver who had just 1 win. Obviously quite popular in his home country. He was killed in a plane crash in ’77.
DSCF0103 – again based on the helmet design, this is Graham Hill. Should be 1974 with his Embassy Racing team. No idea the track.
A number of the F1 related photos are obviously James Hunt, Ronnie Peterson and Emerson Fittipaldi. Whoever collected these photos must’ve been a big fan of these guys.
